There are numerous walking tours, hikes and day trips throughout and around Pátzcuaro. Here are a few of our favorites:
Isla Janitzio: A main destination for Day of the Dead, this island in Lake Pátzcuaro has a 40m statue (that you can climb) filled with murals.
Tzintzuntzan: Across from the archaeological site of the capital of the P´urhépecha empire, is one of the first Franciscan churches in América. It also has a great crafts market.
Volcán de Parícutin: One of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, this volcano erupted in 1943 and slowly buried two entire villages. Although no one was killed, all that's left today is the church ruins.
Santuario de Mariposas El Rosario: Every winter some 300 million Canadian and American Monarch butterflies descend on Michoacán. The hike (or horse ride) up the main hill is spectacular.
Casa de los Once Patios ("House of the Eleven Patios"): A former 17th century convent in the center of Patzcuaro houses the Casa de las Artesanias de Michoacán, where high quality craftwork is demonstrated and sold.
Santa Clara del Cobre: Declared a National Historical Monument in 2001, Santa Clara del Cobre is a small town about 30 minutes from Patzcuaro specializing in copper.
