Trips and Tours
Things to see
There are numerous walking tours, hikes and
day trips throughout and around Pátzcuaro.
A few of our students' favorites include:
Isla Janitzio: A main
destination for Day of the
Dead, this island in Lake
Pátzcuaro has a 40m statue
(that you can climb) filled with
murals.

Tzintzuntzan: Across from
the archaeological site of the
capital of the P´urhépecha
empire, is one of the first
Franciscan churches in
América. It also has a great
crafts market.

Volcán de Parícutin: One of
the 7 Natural Wonders of the
World, this volcano erupted
in 1943 and slowly buried two
entire villages.  Although no
one was killed, all that's left
today is the church ruins.

Santuario de Mariposas El
Rosario
: Every winter some
300 million Canadian and
American Monarch butterflies
descend on Michoacán.  The
hike (or horse ride) up the
main hill  is spectacular.
