| The Paricutin Volcano erupted in the 1940's and swallowed two entire villages over the next few years. From Uruapan, drive north towards Paracho and then west to Angahuan (there is a small sign with a picture of a Volcano). As you enter Angahuan you will be approached by local guides with horses. A guide is recommended for solo travelers or people that want to hike to the top of the Volcano. There will be many more guides and horses throughout Anghuan, at the parking lot and along the hiking trail. Keep driving straight until stones in the road prevent you from driving further. The trail to the church is all downhill getting there and all uphill getting back. It's about 3 miles roundtrip and although it's not well-marked, if you keep heading down hill (bearing left at the one fork in the trail) you'll find it. We highly recommend sampling the blue corn tortilla quesadillas at the base of the church after you've hiked around the lava for a bit. If you want to go to the volcano, you will need a guide. The typical route is 2 hours on a horse, 45 minutes hiking up the volcano, 45 minutes hiking down and another 2 hours on a horse to get to the church. It's then another 30-45 minutes back up to the parking lot. A guide and a horse for the day is about $300 pesos per person. You can also ask someone at the quesadilla stands to drive you to the base of the volcano and save you the 4 hours on a horse. A generous tip is expected. |
