Tocuaro is just 15 minutes from Patzcuaro and is famous for its mask-making. Take the road clockwise around the Lake in the direction of Erongaricuaro. After you pass a sign that says Tocuaro, take your second left (immediately past the bus stop on the left) into town. This road leads to the beautiful church and has numerous mask ("mascaras") shops along the way. Feel free to explore on your own or hire a guide.
Juan Horta, whose masks are internationally known and priced accordingly, passed away in December of 2006. His family continues to show his work and that of his sons (son Modesto Horta pictured right) in their shop on the left-hand side of main street after first intersection. Call 443-112-0655 to make appointment or just stop by. They do not allow photos, although they are happy to answer any of your questions about mask-making.

Our favorite mask-maker to visit is Felipe Horta. Felipe's father brought mask-making to Tocuaro in the 1930's and Felipe is happy to give you a demonstration and allow pictures. Felipe offers courses in mask-making and also has a DVD for sale that explains more about the trade in English. Call 443-391-9718 to schedule an appointment or just stop by his shop. It's the first one on the right.

Felipe Horta gives wonderful group and private mask-making classes in his workshop in Tocuaro as well as in Patzcuaro, Morelia and other towns in Michoacan. Click here for more information.
